Pilates teaches you how to hold your body in the optimum posture for any type of movement. As a precursor to kayaking, you will feel your abdominal muscles, back muscles, sides and legs working together to create and maintain the optimum sitting position in the kayak. This will reduce pain and discomfort, making a day on the water exhilarating and uplifting, with no need to slather on the Ben-Gay that night. Understanding where and how the movements in your body work help you mold with the kayak, and you and the boat will function as one unit on the water, whether it’s a light paddle around the inlet, or out in Peekskill Bay battling the currents of the Hudson. Space is limited for this special workshop so sign up now! Requirements: bring your own mat. Knowledge of pilates or kayaking is helpful, but not necessary.
Marilyn K. Miller, owner of Pilates on Hudson, Inc., began her obsession with Pilates while in rehab for injuries incurred while dancing as a soloist with the San Francisco Opera. Years later, when back injuries sidelined her dance career, she set her eyes on learning how to heal others through pilates as well. After moving to NY, she became certified as a Personal Trainer with the American Council on Exercise in 2000, and in 2003 became a fully certified equipment instructor through Stott Pilates. In addition, she has done continuing education workshops in Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, a specialized typed of flexibility training, osteoporosis, pre-post natal, golfer’s injuries, scoliosis, and Post-Op Back Care. Having done pilates to stay in shape, and also to work through some injuries, she brings a unique “inside-out” perspective to her teaching and her training. She opened Pilates on Hudson in 2003. Currently she teaches private and partner lesson on the Pilates equipment, a variety of small group classes, and lectures throughout Westchester on the benefits of Pilates. You can find more information about her at www.pilatesonhudson.com.
